Ruckomechi

Ruckomechi

24"x36" Acrylic on Canvas

Ruckomechi is on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, a wild and beautiful piece of unspoiled Africa. A buffalo rests as yellow-billed oxpeckers rid him of insects. A zebra drinks from the pan under the shade of an acacia tree where a fish eagle sits, observing everything. This is the winter dry season.

Juvenille Gorilla

Juvenille Gorilla

16"x22" Panel

I saw this young character in the Kahuzi-Biega rainforest in Zaire. He was showing off in front of me, climbing and swinging on the thin branch when suddenly it snapped and he fell flat on his face. I learned that day that gorillas know the meaning of embarrassment.

A Time for Reflection

30"x40" Oil on Linen

The father in this group (left) was feeling decidedly sorry for himself, he had just chastised the baby who had run to the arms of its mother. The old grandmother sitting behind her had in turn chastised the father, who was now sulking. We share more than DNA with our closest relatives.

Elephant

30"x40" Canvas

After a day unsuccesfully waiting for animals by a pan in Zimbabwe, I drove back to camp along a dirt trail and almost missed this great creature as he stood silently above me at the side of the track! I stopped. He raised his trunk, sniffed the air and walked slowly past the rear of my vehicle towards the water hole. Im sure he had been watching me all along.
